Matt Gogel, a golfer on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, was suspended for six months by the organization for placing bets on PGA Tour events, the tour announced Monday.
Gogel issued a statement saying he placed small recreational wagers on golf in 2024 without knowing he did so. He emphasized that the bets were not placed on tournaments in which he participated and said he would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game.
The PGA Tour confirmed that Gogel never bet during a tournament he played in but violated the league’s integrity program, which prohibits wagering on PGA-sanctioned events. His suspension begins Sunday and runs until Feb. 22, 2027.
Gogel, 55, has one PGA Tour victory, at the 2002 Pebble Beach Pro-Am. After his playing career, he became a golf broadcaster for The Golf Channel and CBS Sports. He joined the PGA Tour Champions after turning 50 and currently ranks 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
This is not the first time a golfer has faced suspension for betting on PGA events. In 2023, Vince India and Jake Staiano were suspended for six and three months, respectively, for similar violations, the tour said.
