Secret Service fatally shoots suspect outside White House checkpoint; bystander wounded

A suspect was fatally shot and a bystander wounded after gunfire outside a White House checkpoint, the U.S. Secret Service said.

The suspect began shooting at posted officers, who returned fire and hit the shooter, the Secret Service said.

A bystander also was shot, a law enforcement official said, and it was unclear who fired the shot that wounded the bystander, the official said.

The U.S. Secret Service provided the account of the officers’ actions and a law enforcement official confirmed the bystander was hit.
