A new study found that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Chicago in 2025 cost the area more than $1.26 billion in lost retail, restaurant and sales-tax revenue, the study says.
The study says fear of raids kept many immigrants home, reducing consumer activity across neighborhoods and business districts.
Researchers attributed the damage to declines in retail and restaurant spending and lower sales-tax receipts, according to the report.
The study’s authors say the findings illustrate the economic toll of the 2025 enforcement actions in Chicago, the report states.
