Stefany Shaheen, the daughter of retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, won the Democratic primary Tuesday night in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, according to sources. Her victory sets the stage for a competitive race to replace Rep. Chris Pappas, who is running for the U.S. Senate.
Pappas, who has represented the district since 2019, announced his Senate bid last year. He said in a statement that he is proud to continue fighting for New Hampshire in the Senate. Pappas defeated Republican challenger Russell Prescott in his last reelection, winning 54% to 46%. The district has attracted multiple Democratic contenders, including Marine veteran Maura Sullivan, union organizer Carleigh Beriont, and Army National Guard officer Christian Urrutia. Urrutia later dropped out and endorsed Shaheen, who emerged as a frontrunner.
Shaheen, who announced her retirement last March, received her mother’s endorsement. In a statement, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen praised her daughter’s work on local government, healthcare, and water issues. “She’s working hard to earn voters’ support on her own merits,” the senator said. Shaheen’s campaign emphasizes priorities like Medicare for All, expanding tax credits for first-time homebuyers, and reforming Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Having secured the primary nomination, Shaheen is set to face her general election opponent on Nov. 3. The race is viewed as a critical contest for Democrats seeking to gain control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections.
