Texas man faces charges after allegedly buying cattle with bad checks

A 25-year-old Texas man has been charged after allegedly purchasing 77 head of cattle with bad checks, according to the Leon County Sheriff’s Department.

Payton Dean Carroll was charged with felony second-degree cattle theft after the purchase from Buffalo Livestock Marketing Inc. totaled more than $159,600, the sheriff’s office said Saturday.

The sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division began investigating Carroll on July 17 after receiving a report of the alleged theft. Authorities said Carroll is from Barry, Texas.

The sheriff’s office credited the Buffalo Police Department, the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and Navarro County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during the investigation.
