Tippah County News Today, October 10: Isaias Wind Advisory, Walnut Volleyball, Falkner Win
Saturday in Tippah County is about four things: a wind advisory and a flood watch from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias, a Walnut volleyball team heading into a Monday showdown, a first road win for Falkner football, and progress on new ballfields in Walnut. Here is what to know, starting with what changes your day the most.
Wind and Rain From Isaias: Plan Your Saturday Around It
Our report on the Tippah County wind advisory for Saturday lays out the National Weather Service in Memphis forecast. The advisory runs from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, with northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. Tree limbs could come down, a few power outages are possible, and drivers of box trucks, campers and trailers should take extra care.
The Ripley forecast called for rain all day Saturday, with a high near 66 and one to two inches possible. A flood watch for Tippah, Benton and Hardeman counties was set to run through 7 a.m. Sunday, with totals of 1 to 2.5 inches and locally up to 3 inches. After weeks of dry weather, hard ground can send water into creeks and ditches quickly, so never drive through water covering a road. Sunday is expected to turn mostly sunny with a high near 80.
Conditions can change, so check the National Weather Service Memphis office for the latest. Over at DeSoto County News, the Memphis office reissued the wind advisory early Saturday morning with gusts up to 50 mph for parts of North Mississippi. That report adds that the flood watch was canceled for DeSoto and other counties along the river, but remains in place farther east, including Benton, Union, Lee and Alcorn counties. Our neighbors at Alcorn News MS noted that Alcorn County’s burn ban is set to expire Oct. 12.
If you lose power, Tippah Electric Power Association serves most of Tippah and Benton counties. Stay clear of downed lines and report them to your provider.
Walnut Volleyball Meets East Union on Monday
Walnut swept Myrtle 25-12, 25-8, 25-20 on Thursday to reach a fourth straight North State final, according to Tippah County Sports. The Lady Wildcats are 31-4 and have won 12 matches in a row. They are now the last Tippah County volleyball team still in the playoffs. Ripley’s season ended with a loss to New Albany in the Class 4A third round, and Pine Grove fell at Ingomar in Class 1A.
Next up is East Union, unbeaten at 36-0, on Monday, Oct. 12. East Union beat Walnut 3-1 on Sept. 1, so the Lady Wildcats will have a chance to answer. Weather permitting, it should be a big night for western Tippah County.
Falkner Wins on the Road
On the football field, Tippah County Sports reports that Falkner beat Riverside 28-22 for its first road win of the season, evening the Eagles at 3-3. Falkner opens division play at Ashland on Oct. 16. We did not have final scores from Friday’s Ripley and Walnut games at press time, so check Tippah County Sports for results and the schedule.
Walnut Ballfields and Archery Park Taking Shape
The Town of Walnut shared a progress video on its Facebook page Friday, and we have more in our story on the Walnut ballfields and archery park. The town said there is still plenty of work to do. It did not give an opening date, a cost or which leagues will use the fields. Questions can go to Walnut Town Hall at 662-223-4405.
Tippah County 4-H Exhibitors at the State Fair
Jenna Graves and Lara Horton showed market goats Friday at the Mississippi State Fair in Jackson, according to a post from the Tippah County 4-H Club. Read our full story on Tippah County 4-H goat exhibitors at the State Fair. The fair runs through Oct. 18, and the club’s Facebook page is the place to watch for more results.
Around Northeast Mississippi
Alcorn News MS reports that Corinth received $686,581.32 in its mid-September sales-tax payment, up about 7.5 percent from a year earlier. The Crossroads Museum’s Farm to Fork dinner is set for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. in Corinth. Weather is also reshaping weekend plans elsewhere: DeSoto County News says the Hernando Water Tower 10K and Half Marathon was canceled, and Tupelo postponed its Family Fun Day, according to the Mississippi News Report.
