Tippah County News Today, October 3: Dry Week Ahead, Final Young Frankenstein Weekend, Walnut Homecoming Win
Saturday in Tippah County is about four things: a dry, drought-stricken week ahead with a cold front arriving Sunday evening, the last weekend to catch Young Frankenstein on the Ripley square, the sendoff Walnut gave its final standalone homecoming, and a few dates worth putting on the calendar before Halloween.
Weather: Showers Possible Now, Then a Dry, Cooler Week
The biggest thing for your plans is the weather. According to our Tippah County weather report, which draws on the National Weather Service in Memphis, a stronger cold front is due Sunday evening. The Ripley-area forecast puts Saturday’s high near 82 with about a 22% chance of a passing shower, and Sunday’s high near 80 with a 33% chance of showers or a thunderstorm before the front moves through. Sunday night should drop to around 58.
Behind the front, the forecast calls for sunny skies Monday through Wednesday, highs in the low 80s and lows in the low-to-mid 50s, with rain chances at 0%. Tuesday morning is expected to be the coolest of the week. The weather service says a ridge could push highs well into the 80s later in the week.
That is good weather for people but not for the ground. In the Drought Monitor figures valid Sept. 22, all of Tippah County was in at least moderate drought, and about 45% was in severe drought. With low humidity and breezy afternoons, be careful with outdoor burning, check for burn ban orders before lighting anything, and keep hot vehicles and cigarettes away from dry grass. Ripley: Last Weekend for Young Frankenstein
If you have been meaning to see the Ripley Arts Council’s production of the Mel Brooks musical, this is the last chance. Young Frankenstein closes Sunday at the Dixie Theatre, 106 S. Main St. Tonight’s show is at 7 p.m., and the closing matinee is Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m.
The theater notes the show is PG-13 with adult humor and is not recommended for young children. Tickets are sold through the Stage on Main online box office and at the Dixie Theatre box office. The theater also warns that scammers sometimes post offers of “extra” tickets, so buy only from those two official sources. Questions can go to Stage on Main at 662-993-2787.
Planning ahead, Ripley Main Street has announced a free outdoor screening of Hocus Pocus on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at The Cut-Off, 204 South Commerce Street. Bring blankets and chairs; costumes are welcome, and West Glass Company is sponsoring.
Walnut: A Homecoming Win, and a Halloween Plan
Friday night belonged to the Wildcats. Walnut pulled away from Ashland with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to win 36-14 in what was the last Walnut homecoming before Walnut and Falkner high schools combine into North Tippah High School. Tippah County Sports called it the Wildcats’ “last ever Homecoming.” Full stats had not been released as of Saturday morning.
The consolidation is a big change for the north end of the county. Falkner’s campus is set to close after this school year, and Walnut Attendance Center will host the combined school. For background on how the district got here, see WTVA’s report on North Mississippi schools facing falling enrollment and rising costs.
Walnut is also looking ahead to Halloween. The town says Sweet Treats on Main will fill Main Street on Saturday, Oct. 31, starting at 6 p.m. It is a trunk-or-treat style evening, and the town is still looking for businesses, churches, families and groups to decorate a trunk or set up a table. Call Walnut Town Hall at 662-223-4405 to sign up.
High School and College Volleyball
Thursday was a good night for county volleyball. As Tippah Sports reported, Pine Grove rallied from a first-set loss to beat Saltillo 3-1 and improve to 21-11, while Ripley swept Clarksdale and Falkner swept Biggersville. Ripley is 7-0 in district play, and Falkner is 7-3 in Class 1A Region 1.
At Blue Mountain, Blue Mountain Christian beat William Carey in four sets Thursday at Tyler Gym, 25-19, 19-25, 25-15, 25-20. Salice Speed and Marissa Gerleman each had 12 kills. The Toppers were set to face Mobile at 1 p.m. Saturday in another SSAC match.
Over the state line, Middleton honored seven seniors at its Oct. 1 senior night.
