Tippah County News Today, October 4: Burn Ban, Dry Week, Ripley Volleyball Playoff Next
Sunday in Tippah County comes down to four things: a dry, breezy week with the burn ban still in force, the closing matinee of Young Frankenstein at the Dixie Theatre, Ripley volleyball’s next playoff match on Tuesday, and a tough weekend for Blue Mountain Christian’s teams. It is a quiet news day, so this roundup is shorter than usual.
Burn Ban and a Dry Week
The thing most likely to change your week is the weather. Our Fire Prevention Week report notes that Tippah and Benton counties are both still shown under burn bans on the Mississippi Forestry Commission’s county map, updated Oct. 3. Every ban expires at midnight on its stated date, and exemptions are listed at mfc.ms.gov, so check before you burn anything outdoors.
The National Weather Service in Memphis expects very dry air behind Sunday’s cold front. The Ripley-area forecast calls for sunny skies Monday through Wednesday, with highs near 81 on Monday, 84 on Tuesday and 87 on Wednesday. Humidity could drop below 30 percent on Wednesday and Thursday, and the next real chance of widespread rain may not arrive until late next weekend. Our Tippah County weather outlook has the full week.
Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 4-10 and this year’s theme is safe charging of lithium-ion batteries. That means chargers made for the device, and unplugging when it is full. Next door, Alcorn News reports that NWS Memphis is hosting a free virtual SKYWARN storm-spotter class Monday, Oct. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is at weather.gov/meg/skywarn.
Ripley Volleyball Moves On
The Lady Tigers came from behind Saturday to beat North Pontotoc in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs, as we reported in Ripley Volleyball Rallies Past North Pontotoc. According to Tippah County Sports, Sydney Bates had 20 kills, Ruthie and Maggie McCafferty combined for 27, Stella Roberts had 15 assists and Anna Hays Cook had 13 digs. Ripley plays Itawamba AHS on Tuesday. Time and site had not been posted as of Saturday evening, so watch the school’s social media pages.
Blue Mountain Christian Weekend
Results were mixed for the Toppers. Tippah County Sports reported that the men’s cross country team placed third of nine teams at the Belhaven Invitational in Jackson, and the women finished fourth with 88 points. In Georgia, Thomas University beat the men’s soccer team 4-1 on Friday night after BMCU led at halftime, and edged the women 1-0 Saturday. Tippah County Sports also reported a volleyball loss to the University of Mobile.
Around Town
Today is the last chance to see Young Frankenstein at the Dixie Theatre, 106 S. Main St. The closing matinee is at 2 p.m., and tickets are sold only through Stage on Main’s online box office and the theatre box office. It is PG-13 with adult humor. Ripley Main Street’s free outdoor screening of Hocus Pocus is Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at The Cut-Off, and Walnut’s Sweet Treats on Main is Saturday, Oct. 31, starting at 6 p.m. More is in Saturday’s Tippah County roundup.
Next Door in Corinth
Corinth police arrested a 39-year-old man Friday on kidnapping and attempted murder charges after Thursday’s shooting near Scott Street, according to Alcorn News. The charges are allegations, and police have not released the victim’s name or condition. Alcorn News also posted a Corinth events calendar through December, and DeSoto County News reports drought deepening there as well.
