Walnut Students Tour Toyota Mississippi Plant on STEM Trip

A group of Walnut students toured the Toyota Mississippi plant in Blue Springs this week, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the robotics and advanced manufacturing that go into building cars in northeast Mississippi. Walnut Attendance Center shared photos from the field trip on its Facebook page, calling it “Manufacturing Futures: STEM in Action!”

The trip gave interested high school students a chance to see how the science, technology, engineering and math they study in class translate to jobs on a modern factory floor, according to the school.

Walnut Students See Toyota Mississippi Up Close

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi sits in Blue Springs in Union County, an easy drive south of Tippah County. The plant opened in 2011 and builds the Toyota Corolla. Published reports put its workforce at well over 2,000 people, which makes it one of the largest employers in the region.

In its post, Walnut Attendance Center said students saw everything from “cutting-edge robotics” to precision manufacturing during the visit. The school noted that the automotive and manufacturing industries are changing quickly, and that STEM skills are increasingly what employers want.

The group photo shared by the school shows about two dozen students, along with a school staff member wearing a red Walnut Wildcats shirt.

Connecting the Classroom to Careers

The school said the experience showed students that what they learn in class connects directly to real-world, well-paying careers. Field trips like this are part of a wider push by North Mississippi schools to introduce students to local industry before graduation.

For Tippah County students, the takeaways include:

  • Seeing advanced manufacturing in person, including automated and robotic production lines
  • Learning which skills employers value, especially in science, technology, engineering and math
  • Exploring career pathways close to home, without having to leave Mississippi for good-paying work

Walnut Attendance Center thanked the Toyota Mississippi team for hosting the students and for “inspiring our next generation of innovators, engineers, and creators.”

Career Exposure Growing in Area Schools

The Walnut trip comes during a busy stretch of career-focused events for schools in the area. Just this week, Hickory Flat Attendance Center in neighboring Benton County hosted a Discovery Day that drew hundreds of students to learn about careers. Local schools are also coming off new state accountability grades, with all three Tippah and Benton County districts earning a B.

Parents who want to learn more about career and technical opportunities for their students can contact Walnut Attendance Center or the North Tippah School District office.
