MS House Public Utilities committee votes in favor of expanding access to high speed internet

The Mississippi Legislature voted in favor of allowing electric cooperatives to offer high speed internet to their customers.

This is the first step in the process to allow this to move forward.

From State Representative Jody Steverson:

Today, the House Public Utilities voted in favor of HB 366 which would allow electric cooperatives to offer broadband. This legislation is only the first step in working to get high speed Internet to those rural Mississippians who do not have access to service. Of the many concerns I have on this issue, protecting the electric ratepayers of electric cooperatives and providing more transparency are being addressed in HB366.

As Vice Chairman of Public Utilities, I will continue to work with Chairman Jim Beckett & Speaker Philip Gunn on finding a solution to this problem.

The bill passed unanimously and will now move to the House floor.

See this video below explaining the problem.
