Bolivar Central Student Invited to Honor Society NSHSS

Bolivar Central High School student Jakobi Spencer-Turner has been invited to join the National Society of High School Scholars, an academic honor society for high-achieving students. The Bolivar Central student honor society invitation recognizes his work in the classroom, which he has kept up while playing on the BCHS basketball team, according to a report by The Magnolia Post.

Spencer-Turner told the Hardeman County outlet the recognition came as a surprise. “I know I have good grades, but I wasn’t expecting this,” he said.

What the NSHSS Invitation Means

The National Society of High School Scholars has recognized top high school students for 24 years. It draws members from more than 26,000 high schools across the country, and membership carries on through college and beyond.

For Spencer-Turner, the invitation shows that his effort is paying off. He said being accepted means “all my hard work matters” and that it pushes him to keep working toward his goals.

Balancing Basketball and Books at Bolivar Central

Spencer-Turner has played basketball throughout his high school career, and he admits that balancing a sport with schoolwork has not always been easy. His formula is simple: go to school, go to practice, and stay focused.

• Activities: member of the BCHS basketball team, whose season starts in a few weeks
• Plans: attend college and major in accounting

He also said that staying out of drama while keeping his grades up as an athlete is an accomplishment in itself.

Looking Ahead to College

Spencer-Turner said he has already been accepted to two of his top college choices and plans to study accounting. He credited those acceptances to his academic success and hard work, and he said he hopes to keep succeeding in college and build a career.
