Maila D. Carpenter, 18, of Shannon, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after an alleged attack at Gumtree Park, authorities said. Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Sumner ordered Carpenter held on a $30,000 bond, officials said.
Officers responded June 20 to the North Mississippi Medical Center emergency room at 830 South Gloster Street and contacted a victim who told them they had been approached at Gumtree Park and became involved in an altercation, authorities said.
The victim told officers the suspect produced a firearm and struck the victim repeatedly in the face with the weapon, authorities said.
Carpenter was arrested June 25 and charged with one count of aggravated assault, authorities said. The case will be presented to the Lee County grand jury, officials added.
