15-year-old arrested on aggravated-assault charge after park altercation

A 15-year-old Tupelo resident, identified as Jamarian Donelson, was arrested June 24 and charged with aggravated assault, police said.

Officers responded on June 15 to the North Mississippi Medical Center emergency room at 830 South Gloster Street after a victim reported an assault, police said. The victim told officers that while at Ballard Park they saw a friend being assaulted by a group and were struck in the face with a firearm when they attempted to intervene, police said.

Police said Donelson was charged as an adult because Lee County Circuit Court had previously certified him to be prosecuted as an adult for a prior aggravated-assault charge. At the time of the June 24 arrest, he was out on bond for that earlier case, police said.

On June 25, Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Weir ordered Donelson held without bond. Police said the new charges will be presented to the Lee County grand jury.
