Blue Mountain Christian Athletics Marks Historic Year, Earns Top Character Awards
Blue Mountain, Mississippi — Blue Mountain Christian University athletics reported one of its most successful seasons on and off the field, the university said July 24. The athletic department received the SSAC School of Character Award and earned the NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Gold Medal for the 26th consecutive year, the release said.
The university said Athletic Director Curt Fowler was selected by the Southern States Athletic Conference to serve as the liaison for conference athletic directors in baseball. The release noted Fowler founded BMCU’s baseball program in 2011 and recorded more than 200 victories as head coach before becoming athletic director. The release also said Assistant Athletic Director Brett Fowler was named to the inaugural SSAC Hall of Fame Committee.
The university listed numerous team and individual honors. Softball was named NFCA Region I Coaching Staff of the Year, received the SSAC Mayor Todd Strange Female Champions of Character Team Award and reached the program’s first NAIA National Championship Opening Round, the release said. Men’s golf earned SSAC Co-Coach of the Year and produced the school’s first NAIA Second-Team All-Americans. Bass fishing finished fifth nationally in the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year standings, the release added.
Other recognitions cited in the release included women’s and men’s basketball all-conference honors, multiple baseball all-conference selections, cross country and track & field qualifiers for the NAIA national championships and a range of conference freshman and all-conference awards for volleyball, tennis and soccer, the university said.
The release said academic achievement remained strong, with 56 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 69 SSAC Athletic Solutions All-Academic honorees and an expected 13 NAIA Scholar Teams for the academic year. “Christian higher education is about developing the whole person,” Fowler said in the release, adding that the department values academic success, spiritual growth and character. The university described its mission as developing intellectual integrity, academic excellence, civility and character.
