Booneville Police Department awarded nearly $1 million in grants for equipment, safety improvements

The Booneville Police Department has been awarded nearly $1 million in grant funding to enhance its law enforcement capabilities and school safety measures. The department received a total of $965,852.06 through two separate programs, according to a department news release.

The majority of the funding, $750,000, comes from the federal COPS Grant, which requires no local match. An additional $215,852.06 was awarded through the state-funded LEO Grant, which requires a 50/50 match. The funds will be used to upgrade police vehicles, weapons, computers, body armor, and other essential equipment.

A portion of the grants will support active shooter response equipment and training for School Resource Officers serving Booneville schools. Department officials said the investments aim to ensure officers have the necessary tools and training to respond effectively to critical incidents, especially in educational settings.

Police Chief Michael Ramey emphasized the department’s commitment to public safety and fiscal responsibility. “Our first responsibility is to protect and serve the citizens of Booneville, including our children and school personnel,” Ramey said. “Securing outside funding allows us to make necessary investments while minimizing the financial burden on taxpayers.”

Chief Ramey also thanked Mayor Lori Tucker and the Booneville Board of Aldermen for their support. He noted that ongoing pursuit of federal and state grants is part of the department’s strategy to improve safety, officer readiness, and technology, all while being responsible stewards of public funds.

Representatives from Congressman Trent Kelly’s office delivered official notification of the federal grant funds during a visit to Booneville. Department officials expressed their gratitude for the support and reaffirmed their commitment to continuously seek resources to strengthen community safety.
