Critics: Mississippi spends larger share of education budget on administration than other Southern states

Education advocates say Mississippi directs a larger share of its education budget to administrative costs than any other state in the South.

Those advocates also say the state has some of the lowest-paid teachers in the nation and that assistant teachers in Mississippi are consistently the lowest paid in the country.

Critics add that classroom supply funds in many districts are not activated until after the school year begins, leaving teachers to cover expenses or delay purchases, they say.

Advocates are calling on state leaders to address pay and funding priorities and to move more taxpayer dollars into classrooms to better support teachers and students, the groups say.
