Mississippi DPS appoints new leaders to key public safety roles

Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell announced the appointment of three new leaders to key positions within the agency.

James Herzog has been named deputy commissioner and director of the Mississippi State Bureau of Investigation. He has served as the bureau’s lieutenant colonel since 2024 and brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, including work with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Following the passage of House Bill 1612, Herzog will oversee the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, and the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory. Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Colonel Phillip Pope will serve as deputy director, according to the announcement.

Joshua Bromen has been appointed director of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Division. He previously served as director of the Office of Public Safety and Planning and has extensive experience in law enforcement leadership, training, and public safety. Under the new structure created by House Bill 1612, MLED will oversee the Office of Public Safety and Planning, the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers’ Training Academy, the Driver Service Bureau, and the Office of Standards and Training.

Jim Brinson has been named director of the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security. He has served as interim director and deputy director of the office and has a background in homeland security, emergency preparedness, and public safety. Brinson is a U.S. Air Force veteran with expertise in active shooter response, terrorism prevention, and safety training initiatives.

Governor Tate Reeves praised the appointments, emphasizing the importance of experienced leadership in keeping Mississippians safe. Commissioner Tindell expressed confidence in the new appointees, noting their dedication and professionalism in serving the state’s public safety needs.
