The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned that Memorial Day weekend could bring more motorcyclists onto U.S. roads and urged motorists to watch for bikes.
NHTSA said nearly 40% of a typical vehicle is in blind spots, making it harder for drivers to see motorcycles.
The agency said the risk is stark: in 2024 the fatality rate for motorcyclists was 27 times higher than the rate for passenger car occupants.
NHTSA noted that crashes involving motorcycles often result in severe injuries and that extra vigilance is critical for safety.
The agency urged drivers to look twice before changing lanes and to share the road during Motorcycle Safety Month, saying those actions could save lives.
