Tupelo man charged with possessing firearm as convicted felon after bicycle stop

Mathew A. Griffin, 33, of Tupelo, was charged April 13 with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after officers found a gun during a bicycle stop on South Gloster Street, Tupelo police said.

Police said officers contacted an individual riding a bicycle on South Gloster Street on April 13 and discovered a firearm and drug paraphernalia during the stop. Officers also learned the suspect had a prior felony conviction, police said.

After further investigation, Griffin was charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on April 13, police said. On April 14, Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Allen ordered Griffin held on a $5,000 bond.

The charges are to be presented to the Lee County grand jury, authorities said.
