Denise Jones Gregory chosen as Jackson State’s 14th president
Jackson State University has named Denise Jones Gregory as its 14th president, ending a months-long search conducted by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. The university announced the decision Thursday evening.
Gregory, a Jackson State alumna, has served as interim president since May 2023. She has extensive leadership training, including participation in programs at Clark Atlanta University, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She previously held roles as provost and vice president of academic affairs at JSU.
The Board of Trustees for the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning selected Gregory after reviewing nearly 80 candidates. She advanced through three rounds of interviews, background checks, and reference reviews, according to the IHL.
“Dr. Gregory is an excellent choice by the IHL, she is a Jacksonian,” said Jackson State alumni and State Rep. Chris Bell. “Her background in academia and knowledge of what Jackson State needs will be a perfect fit for the institution.”
Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba expressed confidence in Gregory’s leadership, noting her deep connection to the university and her potential to support Jackson’s economic growth. “Her appointment marks an important moment for JSU,” Lumumba said.
Bell added that he expects Gregory’s leadership to foster growth in student enrollment and academic programs. “It’s a great selection, and I am proud she was chosen as president,” he said.
