Gipson Launches Campaign for Mississippi Governor, Citing Disconnect Between Officials and Voters

Mississippi Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Andy Gipson has officially launched his bid for governor, citing a disconnect between state officials and the state’s working residents. In an interview with Magnolia Tribune, Gipson said, “We have lost the connection between our state officials and the hardworking regular real people of Mississippi.”

Gipson announced his campaign in June 2025, becoming the first Republican to enter the race for Mississippi’s top office in the 2027 election cycle. He reported a positive and sometimes overwhelming response from supporters, with signs appearing across the state, especially in rural areas where he spends much of his time.

The Republican candidate has spent nearly a year building a grassroots network of volunteers and supporters. Gipson said he plans to continue engaging voters directly, emphasizing his background in both government and the private sector. He has served as Mississippi’s commissioner of agriculture since 2018 and previously served nearly a decade in the state House of Representatives.

Gipson highlighted his faith and family as core reasons for running. He said he feels called by his faith to improve the state and address issues affecting Mississippi’s future. He also stressed the importance of elected officials staying connected to everyday Mississippians, including blue-collar workers, single mothers, and small-business owners, many of whom he has served as a pastor.

The 2027 gubernatorial race is expected to be crowded, with incumbent Tate Reeves term-limited. Other Republican candidates rumored to enter include former House Speaker Philip Gunn, State Auditor Shad White, Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, and Attorney General Lynn Fitch. Gipson reported having $256,000 cash on hand in his January campaign finance report, trailing behind his rivals but maintaining his grassroots campaign approach.

Gipson believes his diverse experience—spanning government, private business, and international marketing—sets him apart. He emphasized his ability to make decisive decisions and his track record of passing significant legislation, including bills related to abortion and gun rights. Gipson also highlighted his work with federal agencies and his international experience promoting Mississippi’s markets.

Food security is a key issue for Gipson, who sees his role as Agriculture Commissioner as providing a unique perspective on vulnerabilities exposed during COVID-19. He aims to leverage his experience to address challenges facing Mississippi’s future.
