IAHS senior wins Class 4A girls singles state championship
ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. — Helen Davis, a senior at Itawamba Agricultural High School, won the MHSAA Class 4A girls singles state tennis championship, WCBI reported.
“It took a lot of work, day in and day out,” Davis said. “I could feel the state coming on, but I had that goal in mind, and I had my mind set to it.” WCBI said Davis often practiced on the ICC tennis courts when she was not in class.
Tennis coach Kailee Martin said the victory is the first girls singles state title for IAHS in 25 years. “She is not only a hard worker, but also an inspiration and a mentor to younger tennis players,” Martin said.
Davis said she began playing tennis in seventh grade and felt humbled by the win. “When I actually won it kind of didn’t hit me until maybe two days later,” she said. Martin called Davis “one of the most deserving people to win a state championship,” saying she has been humble and coachable.
Davis is scheduled to graduate in a few weeks and will attend MSU to study aerospace engineering, WCBI reported. She said she hopes to make a club tennis team at MSU and will take part in the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Tennis Match June 10 and 11 at Hinds Community College.
