Jackson hosts Black Men’s Wellness Day with free screenings amid health disparities

Jackson hosted its fifth annual Black Men’s Wellness Day on Saturday, part of a nationwide Wellness Day Tour organized by the African American Male Wellness Agency. Over 450 attendees took advantage of free health screenings, including tests for blood glucose, cholesterol, kidney function, and eye exams, organizers said.

Among those was Joseph Holiday, a first-time participant who discovered elevated protein levels indicating potential kidney damage. Holiday, a New Orleans native now living in Jackson, said he plans to see a doctor immediately, citing a longstanding distrust of the healthcare system rooted in his grandmother’s death from medical malpractice.

Organizers said the event aimed to reach men who might not otherwise seek medical care. Allan Cole, a marketing executive and co-coordinator, emphasized the importance of holding the event on a Saturday to encourage family participation and reduce barriers to attendance. He noted that men often resist medical visits without encouragement from loved ones.

Justin Turner, an assistant professor at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, highlighted Mississippi’s high rate of preventable deaths, especially among Black men. He cited research indicating that distrust and lack of insurance contribute to delays in seeking care, which increases health risks. Turner also noted that many men feel vulnerable when confronting health issues, which can lead to avoidance.

In addition to health screenings, participants took part in a 5K walk or run through downtown Jackson. Retiree Will McDowell has participated annually, while first-time runner Nikitna Barnes, who recently had double knee replacement surgery, joined for her first event. The event fostered community ties and awareness about health disparities, with organizers hopeful it will help improve life expectancy in Mississippi.
