Mississippi allocates $23 million in federal funds to 41 communities

Mississippi is deploying more than $23 million in federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to support infrastructure and community projects across 41 cities and counties, according to the Mississippi Development Authority.

Gov. Tate Reeves said the funding will help communities address urgent needs, modernize infrastructure, and improve residents’ quality of life. “These investments empower cities and counties to take on real projects that improve everyday life—from safer roads to stronger public facilities and more reliable services families depend on,” Reeves said Monday.

Projects receiving funding must meet one of three federal objectives: benefiting low- and moderate-income residents, eliminating slums or blight, or addressing urgent community needs that pose health or safety threats without other financial resources. The selected projects target sewer improvements, stormwater drainage, road upgrades, ADA accessibility, fire improvements, and building renovations.

Examples include sewer work in Belzoni, Crystal Springs, and Starkville; stormwater drainage in Anguilla and Edwards; and public building renovations in Philadelphia. Funding amounts vary, with some projects receiving more than $750,000 to address specific infrastructure needs.

Reeves expressed appreciation for the federal funds, emphasizing their role in fostering local development and economic growth. The grants aim to support communities’ efforts to improve public safety, health, and economic opportunities, the governor added.
