Mississippi opens applications for wild hog control program

Mississippi officials are accepting applications through May 15 for a wild hog control program that offers “smart” traps to private landowners and managers, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce said.

The department said it will provide training and technical guidance on using the traps and on effective trapping methods. Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson encouraged landowners and managers to apply, saying, “This trapping program continues to deliver positive results in the fight against these destructive nuisance animals, which cause significant damage to farmland and forestlands across Mississippi.”

Applications must be completed and submitted online, officials said. Officials said submitted applications will be evaluated based on the number of acres available for trapping, historical agricultural losses caused by wild hogs on the property, and current trapping efforts on the property.

Officials encouraged adjoining land managers of small parcels to submit cooperative applications. They said traps will be available for one-month intervals depending on use and success and recommended one trap per 500 acres, depending on landscape and land use.
