Mississippi State and Ole Miss to face separate opponents in NCAA baseball super regionals
The NCAA baseball tournament has entered the super regional round following a chaotic regional phase that saw nine of the 16 national seeds advance. The round features seven Southeastern Conference teams, one Atlantic Coast Conference team, and four mid-major programs, according to sources.
Notably absent are the top two seeds, UCLA and Georgia Tech. This marks the first time since the tournament’s current format began in 1999 that neither of the previous year’s College World Series teams will return to Omaha, as none of last year’s CWS teams made it past regional play.
The super regionals will feature four best-of-three series from Friday through Sunday and four more from Saturday through Monday. The winners will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, which begins June 12.
Mississippi State will face Georgia, while Ole Miss will play Auburn, with both matchups considered highly competitive. Other notable series include Oklahoma versus Kansas and St. John’s versus Alabama.
Additionally, Cal Poly, Kansas, Little Rock, and Troy are making their super regional debuts, with performances highlighted by impressive pitching and offensive stats. Meanwhile, North Carolina remains the only ACC team to advance, seeking its third national title since 2015.
This year’s tournament also marks a significant shift, as no teams from last year’s CWS are participating, breaking a nearly 70-year streak of at least one returning team. The SEC continues its dominance, with six of the last 16 national champions hailing from the conference, which is expected to have multiple teams in Omaha this year.
