SuperTalk Mississippi News wins community service award, several MPA honors
SuperTalk Mississippi News won the Community Service Award and several other honors at the Mississippi Press Association’s 160th annual meeting and awards, the association said. The newsroom won in the all multi-day class after helping raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Palmer Home for Children in 2025, the MPA said. It also placed third in the Best Use of Social Media category.
The outlet earned individual recognitions in categories that included Sports News Story, Sports Feature, Game Story, Commentary Column, Sports Action Photograph and Headline, the MPA said. “I’m just so proud of this team,” SuperTalk Mississippi News Director J.T. Mitchell said. “Of course, the individual honors are great – and well-deserved – but the two newsroom-wide awards reflect how our journalists work in lockstep every day to fulfill our mission, which is providing accurate coverage while supporting the statewide community that supports us.”
Articles that placed in the competition included “O’Connor aiming for sustained success as new Mississippi State skipper” by Ben Milam; “Saltillo High School punctuates archery dominance with bullseye in national championship” by J.T. Mitchell; “Ole Miss undeterred by outside noise, defeats Mississippi State 38-19 in Egg Bowl” by Caleb Salers; “Now is the time to form Coastal Mississippi Economic Development Alliance” by Ricky Mathews; and “Lane Train wreck: Kiffin era ends at Ole Miss, Golding promoted as head coach” by Caleb Salers, the MPA said.
Blake Harrell’s photo of Mississippi State wide receiver Anthony Evans III hurdling a Tennessee defender during the teams’ Sept. 27, 2025, matchup earned first place in the Sports Action Photograph category, the MPA said. Judges called it “An amazing shot of an amazing play,” the association said.
The awards ceremony was held at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Biloxi on Saturday during the MPA’s 160th annual meeting, which featured sessions, roundtables and a silent auction, the association said. “It was a great weekend, considering it is the honor of my professional life to represent SuperTalk Mississippi News and be recognized alongside this wonderful team,” multimedia journalist Caleb Salers said. The MPA said SuperTalk competes in a group that includes The Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi Today, the Sun Herald and the Daily Journal, and that this year’s editorial contest was judged by volunteers from other press associations nationwide.
