US and Iran Near Framework to Extend Ceasefire, Reopen Strait of Hormuz

The Washington Post reports that the United States and Iran have developed a ‘framework’ aimed at extending their ceasefire for 60 days as negotiations continue toward a final agreement to end the war in Iran. The deal would also involve demining and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a senior administration official told the Post.

However, the official cautioned that no agreement has been signed and it is unclear how binding the framework is. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed cautious optimism Monday in New Delhi, saying negotiators have a ‘pretty solid’ proposal on the table to open the strait and engage in significant, time-limited talks on Iran’s nuclear program, though he provided few details.

A diplomat familiar with the negotiations told the Post that the latest proposal is awaiting Iran’s approval. The outcome of these discussions remains uncertain as both sides work toward a potential deal amid ongoing tensions in the region.
