Bass likens reality TV rival to Trump as tight Los Angeles mayoral race heads to likely runoff
Mayor Karen Bass appeared to liken challenger Spencer Pratt to President Donald Trump during an Instagram livestream Saturday as the Los Angeles mayoral primary tightened and recent polls suggested no candidate was likely to win a majority, meaning the top two would advance to a November runoff, news reports show.
Bass, who is seeking a second term, stopped at Yosemite Recreation Center in Eagle Rock and was seen serving tacos while wearing an apron that read “Common Sense and Carne Asada,” according to the livestream. During the broadcast she said, “You have a failed reality TV star who wants to be famous,” before appearing to reference the president, the livestream shows. Bass is backed by high-profile Democrats, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, campaign statements and news coverage said.
Pratt, best known for his role on the reality show “The Hills,” spent part of Saturday criticizing city council member Nithya Raman on X and attacking her recent campaign advertisements, X posts show. He has also criticized Bass over the city’s response to the January 2025 wildfires that destroyed thousands of structures, including his Pacific Palisades home, and over homelessness, drug addiction and crime, according to his campaign statements and news reports.
Raman urged supporters to turn out in a video posted to Instagram, citing a recent poll and saying, “After millions of dollars of spending against us, we are still here and we are still competitive,” the post shows. Recent polling has shown the race competitive, with no candidate expected to receive more than 50 percent of the vote, news outlets reported.
Pratt has picked up endorsements from reality television personalities, actors, musicians and media figures in recent weeks, campaign announcements and coverage show. Still, he remains a registered Republican in a city where Democratic candidates have historically dominated local elections. Fox News Digital reporters Adam Pack, Kiera McDonald and Andrew Mark Miller, along with The Associated Press, contributed to this report.
