Bipartisan senators press administration to free family planning aid for women in DRC Ebola outbreak

Two U.S. senators urged the Trump administration on Thursday to release family planning funding and supplies to aid women affected by the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, they wrote in a letter to the State Department.

Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said in the letter that they were pressing officials to lift restrictions that are preventing the disbursement of family planning assistance.

The senators said releasing funding and supplies would help women facing heightened reproductive health risks during the ongoing outbreak, according to the letter.

The request was made in a bipartisan appeal to State Department officials, the letter said. Shaheen and Murkowski asked for prompt action to ensure aid reaches women in affected areas.
