NFL draft prospects and trades could inject excitement into a quiet 2026 class

The 2026 NFL draft is expected to lack the typical excitement that makes drafts memorable, largely due to a shortage of high-profile quarterbacks and compelling storylines, according to industry analysts.

Aside from presumptive No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza, who is skipping the draft, there are no standout players comparable to past drafts like 1983, which featured seven future Hall of Famers in the first round. This year’s draft also lacks polarizing figures like Shedeur Sanders or Randy Moss, further dampening anticipation, experts say.

Despite the quiet talent pool, trades are expected to play a significant role. Teams such as the Jets, Browns, Chiefs, Dolphins, and Cowboys hold multiple first-round picks, creating opportunities for strategic moves. Browns General Manager Andrew Berry acknowledged the likelihood of trades, noting that teams are always exploring their options.

Some teams may trade up for offensive linemen, particularly tackles, as the talent at that position becomes scarce beyond the early picks. Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach said a run of offensive linemen could occur between picks 10 and 25, highlighting the importance of the position.

Trade rumors also revolve around veteran players. The New York Giants are reportedly open to trading nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, who has expressed a desire to leave. However, sources say the Giants value Lawrence highly and would require a significant draft package to acquire him. Giants General Manager Joe Schoen said the team remains open to calls but has no imminent plans to trade him.

Other trade scenarios appear less likely. There is no indication the Cleveland Browns are attempting to move star edge rusher Myles Garrett, and the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to hold onto receiver A.J. Brown until after June 1 for salary cap reasons. The Los Angeles Chargers also denied rumors of trading receiver Quentin Johnston, with GM Joe Hortiz stating no trade talks have occurred regarding the player.
