Royals commit three errors on one play, Mets take early 3-0 lead
The Kansas City Royals committed three errors on a single play Tuesday night, allowing the New York Mets to take a 3-0 lead, according to game accounts.
With runners on first and second, Mets outfielder Carson Benge hit a slow chopper back toward the mound, according to play-by-play reports. Royals pitcher Seth Lugo fielded the ball but his off-balance throw to first sailed wide of first baseman Jac Caglianone for the first error, the accounts say.
Caglianone recovered and tried to throw out Benge as he raced for third, but that throw sailed into foul territory, according to the game accounts. Third baseman Nick Loftin’s relay throw then got away, allowing Benge to score. The three miscues on one play produced three unearned runs before the third out of the inning, the reports show.
Kansas City rallied later in the game and tied it at 9-9 by the fifth inning, according to game accounts. The teams’ officials did not immediately provide additional comment.
