Scalise urges Pritzker to reflect after blaming Trump for political violence
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., challenged Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker to examine his own rhetoric after Pritzker accused President Donald Trump of creating a climate that tolerates political violence.
During an interview with Sean Hannity on Tuesday, Scalise said, “Governor Pritzker needs to look at the man in the mirror, and that’s where it needs to start. Stop the inciteful rhetoric that he and others like him are using deliberately. They know what they’re doing – it needs to stop.”
Scalise, who was shot and seriously wounded during a 2017 attack targeting Republican lawmakers in Virginia, condemned Pritzker’s remarks to Politico. Pritzker had stated that the president has set a tone where political violence is acceptable, citing past comments from Trump.
“Literally days into Donald Trump’s second term, he was comparing the president to Hitler and Nazis, and he does this repeatedly,” Scalise said. “He said, ‘Republicans, remember that, Republicans cannot know a moment of peace.’ What does he mean by that?”
Pritzker’s comments followed a shooting at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, where the gunman’s manifesto listed targets including Trump administration officials, excluding FBI Director Kash Patel. Scalise pointed out that many attempted assassins have echoed Nazi rhetoric similar to that used by Pritzker, urging an end to such inflammatory language.
Scalise also warned against rising partisan hostility, claiming that the far-left has taken control of the Democratic Party. “People need to vote this November because that is the kind of methodology and ideology that wants to take back over. We can’t let it happen,” he said.
