Tippah County sports roundup, Sept. 12: Walnut delivers Meeks’ 90th win; BMCU runners take second

Walnut handed Holly Springs its first loss Friday, winning 22–14 to give coach John Meeks his 90th career victory and the Wildcats a 2–1 record.

The road win leads the Sept. 12 Tippah County sports roundup, with reporting from Tippah County Sports. Blue Mountain Christian’s cross-country teams also earned runner-up finishes Friday in Arkansas.

Walnut rebounds; Ripley and Falkner fall

The Wildcats recovered from a 29–0 loss at Belmont and left Holly Springs with their second win in three games. Meeks had become Tippah County’s winningest high school football coach with his 89th victory in the season opener, as TippahSports.com reported in its Walnut preview.

Ripley lost 42–7 at Lewisburg after the Patriots built a 42–0 halftime lead. Falkner fell 41–6 at Bruce, which improved to 3–0. Both the Tigers and Eagles are now 1–2.

On Sept. 18, Walnut visits Alcorn Central and Ripley hosts East Webster, with both games scheduled for 7 p.m. Central. Falkner next hosts East Union on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Read the complete football report.

BMCU cross-country teams finish second

Ella Shepherd placed sixth in 19:45.80 to lead the Blue Mountain Christian women to second place at Friday’s Harding Invitational in Searcy, Arkansas. Kaedyn Wilson was 15th in 21:01.10, followed by Ally Moore in 20th, Jorja Kate Mooneyhan in 21st and Ruth Hutchinson in 24th. Read the women’s cross-country recap.

The BMCU men also finished second. Jonah Barnhardt led the Toppers with a seventh-place time of 21:17.60, while Lukas Dykes finished 11th in 21:56.30. Samuel Aguilar placed 21st and Austin Ellis was 25th. Read the men’s cross-country recap.

Saturday volleyball

Pine Grove and Walnut are included in TippahSports.com’s Saturday volleyball listings, which also feature Lake Cormorant, New Albany and Olive Branch. The listings include a Pine Grove–Walnut matchup. Fans should confirm match times and sites with their schools before traveling.
