Cameron Brink cites racial privilege in marketing opportunities in WNBA

Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink is calling attention to racial disparities in endorsement opportunities within the WNBA. In an interview with Interview magazine, Brink acknowledged her own success in fashion and social media, noting that her appearance as a white, blonde athlete provides her with marketing advantages, which she says many players do not receive.

“I’ve tried to be vocal about this and acknowledge there’s such a privilege, marketing-wise, being white and blonde,” Brink said. She expressed concern that players who put up strong statistics are often overlooked by brands, despite their on-court performance. Brink also discussed the league’s rising popularity and her efforts to build her personal brand, including her ventures into fashion and media.

Brink, a former Stanford standout, was selected second overall in the 2024 WNBA draft. Her rookie season was marred by a significant injury, limiting her to 15 games. She shared her recovery journey on social media and has since expanded her presence by appearing in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit and co-hosting the “Straight to Cam” podcast with Sydel Curry-Lee.

She also addressed the financial challenges faced by many players, emphasizing that outside of contracts, earning opportunities remain limited, especially in expensive markets like Los Angeles and New York. Brink highlighted the league’s ongoing efforts to secure fair pay for players, noting that the quality of play has been high for nearly 20 years despite the league’s relatively young status.

“It’s still a really young league, and obviously we’re going through our whole battle with the CBA,” Brink said. “We’re just trying to get paid what we’re worth. I think people are seeing the W as this new and shiny thing, but for two decades the level of play has been so high. I look up to so many women, like Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie. They’re famous now, but I wish they had that recognition while they were playing.”
