The New York Yankees took Game 1 of the best-of-three American League Wild Card Series in the Bronx, propelled by a scoreless outing from right-hander Cam Schlittler and a six-RBI night from Ben Rice.
Fox News reported Schlittler, a Walpole, Massachusetts native, worked 6.1 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, two hits and one walk. The outlet said Schlittler threw a career-high 117 pitches and had a 65.8% strike rate (77 strikes) in the outing.
Fox News reported Ben Rice, a Cohasset, Massachusetts native, drove in six runs on two home runs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth, and finished 4-for-5 with a double.
Fox News reported additional offensive contributions included George Lombard Jr. going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and catcher Austin Wells going 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
Fox News reported Boston starter Payton Tolle lasted 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. The outlet said the Yankees had 12 hits in the game compared with Boston’s three.
Fox News reported Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ three-time MVP, was not on New York’s postseason roster for the series and therefore could not be added midseries.
Fox News reported Boston is expected to send Sonny Gray to the mound in Game 2 as the Red Sox face a win-or-go-home matchup in the Bronx; Fox News also wrote the Yankees hope to advance to the AL Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays if they close the series.
