Titus wins Democratic primary in Nevada’s 1st District

U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., won the Democratic primary in Nevada’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating Gabriel Cornejo, Joy Hoover and Luis Paniagua, according to official results. The victory secures her party’s nomination for an eighth term in Congress.

Titus has represented the Las Vegas-area district since 2013 and previously served in the U.S. House after being first elected in 2008, her congressional biography says. She also served two decades in the Nevada Senate and worked as a political science professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, according to her biography.

Challengers argued Democrats should embrace a new generation of leadership, a point Titus dismissed during the campaign, her campaign said. Titus pointed to her seniority and her record on tourism, transportation and veterans affairs as reasons voters should return her to Congress, her campaign added. Her opponents were unable to gain significant traction in a race that local coverage said was largely overshadowed by higher-profile statewide contests.

Attention now turns to the general election, where Titus is expected to face the Republican nominee in a district that has become more competitive after redistricting. The Cook Political Report rates Nevada’s 1st District as “Likely Democrat,” and the Cook Partisan Voting Index gives the district a D+2 rating. The district includes much of eastern Las Vegas, Henderson, Paradise and surrounding communities in Clark County.
