Trump administration expands visa restrictions in Western Hemisphere targeting adversaries

The Biden administration on Thursday announced a broad expansion of its visa restriction policy in the Western Hemisphere, targeting individuals working on behalf of U.S. adversaries. The State Department said the new policy allows it to restrict visas for people who intentionally act to undermine U.S. interests.

In a statement, the department said the move aligns with the administration’s goal to protect regional security and U.S. interests. The policy targets those involved in activities such as undermining regional stability, destabilizing security efforts, or enabling adversarial powers to control key assets and strategic resources in the region.

The department added that family members of individuals subject to visa restrictions will also be ineligible for entry into the United States. The policy applies to nationals of Western Hemisphere countries who knowingly support activities that undermine U.S. interests, including funding, authorization, or direct involvement in adversarial actions.

Since the policy’s implementation, 26 individuals have been subject to visa restrictions under the new rules, according to the State Department. The administration said it will continue to use all available tools to safeguard U.S. national security, promote regional stability, and defend American interests.

This announcement follows recent moves by the Biden administration to tighten visa policies worldwide, including bans on travelers from dozens of countries. Critics have voiced concerns about broad definitions of prohibited activities and potential impacts on due process, with some civil rights advocates warning against policies perceived as targeting based on national origin.
