Walnut Commercial Development Planned by SJ Property

A new Walnut commercial development is headed for the small Tippah County town. The Town of Walnut announced on its official Facebook page in recent days that SJ Property Investments LLC is bringing a new commercial development to Walnut, a project town leaders say will create room for new businesses and more growth.

“Exciting things are coming to Walnut!” the town wrote, calling the project “another upcoming development in our town.”

What the town has shared about the Walnut commercial development

Along with the announcement, the town posted a rendering of the project with the words “Coming Soon to Walnut, MS.” It shows a single-story building with a row of glass storefronts and a large parking lot out front. The signs in the drawing read boutique, cafe, bookstore and salon.

The town was careful to add that those names are only placeholders. The businesses shown in the rendering are for illustration only and do not represent confirmed businesses that will occupy the spaces, the post said.

The town also shared a photo of two men posing in front of an excavator and a sign for SJ Investing in Properties. The town did not name them in the post.

Details that have not been released yet include:

  • The exact site of the new building
  • The number of storefronts and their size
  • The cost of the project or a construction timeline
  • Which businesses will lease the spaces

Tippah News will update this story as more information becomes available.

A big announcement tied to Sweet Treats on Main

The news follows Walnut’s 2nd Annual Sweet Treats on Main, held Saturday night, Oct. 31, on Main Street downtown. The town’s flyer for the Halloween event promised a “big community announcement” and teased that “something new is coming to Walnut.”

SJ Property Investments also had a hand in the night’s fun. The town thanked the company and J&W Electrical and Plumbing for “making it RAIN CANDY” during the event’s candy drop, which the flyer said would come from a mini excavator bucket at 7 p.m.

Residents react and suggest businesses

The announcement drew dozens of reactions, comments and shares within a day. Several residents used the comments to suggest businesses they would like to see fill the new spaces, including a drive-thru coffee chain.

“We love seeing people invest in Walnut and its future,” the town wrote. “We look forward to watching this project come to life and can’t wait to see what opportunities it brings to our little town!”

Part of a busy stretch for Walnut

The planned development is the latest in a string of projects in Walnut, which calls itself “Mississippi’s healthiest hometown.” Earlier this fall, the town shared progress on new ballfields and an archery park. Downtown events such as Sweet Treats on Main and movie nights on Main Street have also drawn crowds to the town center.

Walnut sits in northern Tippah County near the Tennessee line, along Mississippi Highway 15 just south of Middleton, Tennessee. New retail and service space could give local shoppers more options closer to home instead of driving to Ripley, Corinth or Tennessee.
