Falkner falls to Smithville despite valiant effort

Coach Vince Lombardi famously said “we didn’t lose the game, we just ran out of time.” Falkner’s effort against Smithville Friday night epitomized that saying.

Down 36-14 late in the second half, Falkner staged a gritty comeback but fell just short against the Seminoles of Smithville, 36-30.

“I want you guys to know I am proud of the fight you showed tonight. A lot of teams would have laid down,” Falkner Coach Quess Hood said of his teams effort.

Falkner found themselves down late after Smithville’s Jabril Smith scored his 5th rushing touchdown with 9:08 to go in the 4th quarter.

The Eagles had gotten on the board up to that point on a pair of touchdowns, one rushing and one on a long completion from Lane Elliott.

The final touchdowns included a “won’t be denied” score on a catch and run from Elliott to TJ Colom and a buzzer beater from Elliott to Chauncey Jackson.

The loss moved the Eagles to 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in division play. Falkner is at home next week with a must-win game against Tupelo Christian.
