Tippah County 4-H Heifer, Lamb Exhibitors Show at State Fair

Tippah County 4-H members were back in the show ring at the Mississippi State Fair in Jackson on Saturday, with nine young exhibitors showing in the commercial heifer and lamb competitions. The Tippah County 4-H heifer and lamb show results continue a busy fair week for local youth, following the county’s goat exhibitors earlier in the week.

Tippah County 4-H shared the news and a set of photos from the arena on its official Facebook page Saturday, saying the exhibitors “represented Tippah County very well.”

The day opened with the commercial heifer show. According to Tippah County 4-H, three local members led cattle into the ring:

  • Hailey Ivey
  • Lola Jones
  • Sarah Kate Childs

The lamb show followed, with six Tippah County exhibitors:

  • Bella Alberson
  • Jenna Graves
  • Emily Mauney
  • Lorenzo Lopez
  • Laken Vick
  • Macie Wommack

Jenna Graves also showed in the goat competition on Friday, making her one of the county’s busier exhibitors at this year’s fair. Placings were not listed in the 4-H post.

A long road to the state show ring

Livestock projects are among the most demanding in 4-H. Exhibitors typically spend months feeding, grooming, walking, and training their animals before a show, and they learn record keeping, animal health, and showmanship along the way. Getting an animal ready to stand calmly in front of a judge at the state level takes daily work from young people and their families.

The Mississippi State Fair, which opened Oct. 8 and runs through Oct. 18 at the state fairgrounds in Jackson, hosts livestock shows for 4-H and FFA members from across the state throughout its run.

Neighbors at the fair

Tippah County is not the only area county with youth in Jackson this week. The Benton County Extension Office said the Rakestraw family is representing Benton County 4-H at the State Fair as the county’s only 4-H family making the trip this year, and it asked residents to send the family good-luck wishes.

Families who want to follow the rest of the local exhibitors’ fair week can watch the Tippah County 4-H Facebook page, which has been posting updates and photos from the show ring. Residents interested in joining 4-H can contact the Tippah County Extension Office in Ripley for information on livestock and other project areas.
