Tippah County 4-H Poultry Win: Hubbard Named Grand Champion

A Tippah County 4-H member is bringing home top honors from the Mississippi State Fair. Tippah County 4-H poultry exhibitor Kaylin Hubbard won Senior Showmanship Grand Champion at the fair’s poultry show in Jackson, the Tippah County 4-H program announced on its official Facebook page Thursday, Oct. 15.

Hubbard also placed first in the senior layer class, according to the post, giving her two of the top results for local youth at this year’s fair.

The 4-H post congratulated Hubbard on both wins:

  • Senior Showmanship: Grand Champion
  • Senior Layer: First place

A photo shared with the announcement shows Hubbard in front of the Mississippi State Fair backdrop, holding her ribbons, certificates, an award plaque and a Mississippi State Fair Poultry Show banner.

The post drew a quick wave of congratulations from friends, family and community members in the comments. Competing at the state level puts local exhibitors against many of the best young poultry showmen in Mississippi.

What Showmanship Means

In youth livestock and poultry shows, showmanship is judged differently from the bird classes. Instead of scoring only the animal, judges look at the exhibitor: how well they handle and present their bird, and how much they know about its breed, care, health and anatomy. Senior showmanship is for the older age division, where the competition is often the toughest.

Layer classes are for hens raised for egg production. Exhibitors spend weeks or months raising, feeding and caring for their birds before show day, and they learn record keeping and animal health along the way. These are the life skills 4-H projects are built to teach.

A Busy State Fair for Local 4-H

Hubbard’s wins cap a strong fair run for Tippah County youth. The Mississippi State Fair opened Oct. 8 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 18, at the state fairgrounds in Jackson, with livestock and poultry shows for 4-H and FFA members from across the state throughout its run.

Earlier in the fair, Tippah County 4-H members showed goats, commercial heifers and lambs. Tippah County 4-H is part of the Mississippi State University Extension Service, and its county office is on Highway 15 South in Ripley. Families interested in 4-H projects, including poultry, can contact the Tippah County Extension office or follow the club’s Facebook page for updates.
