Monday in Tippah County comes down to four things: another hot, mostly sunny day with an outside shot at overnight storms, a countywide burn ban that is still very much in force, three high school volleyball matches on tonight’s schedule, and a weekend of cross country and soccer results still worth knowing about if you missed them.
Hot Again Today, With a Storm Chance Tonight
North Mississippi, including Tippah County, can expect a mostly sunny and hot Monday with highs in the mid-90s, according to SuperTalk Mississippi’s forecast reported by Tippah News. The overnight low is expected to fall to around 70, and forecasters say showers or thunderstorms are possible after dark.
That storm chance lines up with what the City of Olive Branch reported, via DeSoto County News, citing the National Weather Service in Memphis: a few strong to isolated severe storms are possible across the Mid-South and northeast Mississippi later today, mainly in the afternoon and evening hours, with a wind gust near severe limits the main concern. The weather service is not expecting tornadoes or large hail, and the overall chance for severe weather remains low. Still, it’s worth keeping an eye on the sky if you’re headed to a ballgame tonight.
Farther south, the SuperTalk Mississippi forecast calls for sunny skies and highs in the upper 90s across central Mississippi, with a nighttime low near 73 and a chance of showers. South Mississippi should see mostly clear skies, highs in the mid-90s and a “decent chance” of thunderstorms overnight. None of it changes the bigger picture for Tippah County: hot and dry is still the story, and any rain that falls tonight is likely to be spotty rather than a real drought-breaker.
Burn Ban Still in Effect Countywide
Tippah County remains under the Mississippi Forestry Commission’s official burn ban, and nothing about that has changed heading into the new week. As Tippah News reported when the ban became official, no outdoor burning of any kind is currently allowed anywhere in the county, with only narrow exemptions for things like certified burn managers and agricultural field burns. Violating the ban is a misdemeanor carrying a $100 to $500 fine, enforced locally by the Tippah County Sheriff’s Department.
The ban is expected to run roughly 30 days from when it was requested on Sept. 18, meaning into mid-October, though the forestry commission can lift it sooner if conditions improve. Tippah has gone from drought-free in mid-August to abnormally dry countywide, with much of the county already in moderate drought, and today’s forecast of only an isolated overnight storm chance is unlikely to change that picture much. Residents with questions about what’s allowed can contact the Board of Supervisors or their local volunteer fire department. The best chance for real relief still looks to be a cold front later this week, which forecasters say offers the first real shot at meaningful rain for the county.
Three Volleyball Matches Tonight
It’s a busy night on the volleyball schedule, with all three Tippah County teams in action, according to Tippah County Sports. The Ripley Tigers host the Senatobia Warriors at home, with first serve at 6 p.m. The Pine Grove Panthers travel to Booneville to face Thrasher at 6:30 p.m., and the Falkner Eagles are on the road in Corinth to take on Biggersville, also at 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow live scoring and results for all three matches through MaxPreps, linked from TippahSports.com’s schedule page.
Weekend Recap: Rowland’s Personal Best, BMCU Soccer Draws
If your weekend was busy, here’s what you may have missed. Ripley senior Dasha Rowland ran a personal-best 26 minutes, 54.80 seconds at Saturday’s Saltillo Cross Country Invitational, placing 34th out of 102 finishers in the Class 1A-4A girls race and leading a six-runner Tigers contingent. Sophomore Kailyn Shead was next for Ripley in 58th place. On the soccer pitch, Blue Mountain Christian University’s men’s and women’s teams both settled for 1-1 draws on Senior Day against William Carey Wesleyan. On the gridiron, Ripley fell 34-0 to East Webster on Friday, Sept. 18, dropping the Tigers to 1-3 on the season.
