Denise Jones Gregory named Jackson State University’s next president

Jackson State University has selected Denise Jones Gregory as its next president, making her the 14th leader of the historically Black college. The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning’s Board of Trustees announced the appointment Thursday, with Gregory set to assume the role on May 1, IHL spokesman John Sewell said.

Gregory, an alumna, has served as interim president since May 2025. She expressed gratitude in an email, saying, “Jackson State University has shaped my life in profound ways, so it is a distinct honor to serve as president of the university that helped shape me.” Supporters, including Jackson Mayor John Horhn, and alumni groups have praised her selection, emphasizing her understanding of HBCU culture and leadership qualities.

Gregory will be the university’s fourth president in about six years. Her predecessor resigned without explanation, leaving behind lawsuits. She was among 79 applicants, advancing through first and second-round interviews and background checks conducted by AGB Search, according to IHL. The board did not disclose the number of applicants or finalists prior to her selection.

Some alumni and observers expressed concerns about the transparency of the process. Mark Dawson, chairman of Thee 1877 Project, noted that while Gregory is a logical choice, the process remains flawed and lacked meaningful input from advisory committees. Critics also pointed to recent internal hires at other Mississippi universities as part of a pattern of limited transparency.

Supporters like state lawmakers praised Gregory’s leadership qualities. Sen. Sollie Norwood called her the best choice to guide Jackson State through challenging times, emphasizing plans to improve student recruitment and housing. Rep. Zakiya Summers described her as personable and integrity-driven, while Rep. Chris Bell noted her longstanding connection to the university and consistent character. Some legislators acknowledged concerns about the process but supported her ultimately.

Gregory’s appointment comes at a time when Jackson State seeks stability and growth. Alumni and community members see her as a leader capable of advancing the university’s legacy and addressing key issues such as funding and infrastructure.
