Blue Mountain Christian University honors legacy of Dr. Johnny L. Mattox
BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — Blue Mountain Christian University on Aug. 1 recognized the career and influence of Dr. Johnny L. Mattox, the university said. Mattox serves as associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of biology, and the university described him as one of Mississippi’s most respected science educators.
The university said Mattox has taught for more than five decades, shaping the lives of thousands of students, mentoring aspiring teachers and influencing healthcare professionals, educators and other leaders. The university said he joined Blue Mountain Christian University in 2005 and has helped shape its biology and science programs.
Blue Mountain Christian University listed numerous honors it said Mattox has received, including the Mississippi Science Teachers Association’s Outstanding College Science Teacher Award and the Distinguished Science Teacher recognition. The university also cited his selection as a Blue Mountain College Faculty HEADWAE Award honoree, Outstanding Alumnus of the Year for the Phi Theta Kappa Mississippi-Louisiana Region, induction as an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement honoree and the University of Mississippi School of Education Practitioner of Distinction Award in 2020, as well as repeated inclusion in Who’s Who listings.
The university said Mattox has published research on teaching methods, student achievement, scientific literacy, service learning, climate change education, public health topics and student responses to issues such as COVID-19. It said he has presented work through the Mississippi Academy of Sciences and the Mississippi Science Teachers Association and has held leadership roles, including president of the Mississippi Science Teachers Association and positions with the Mississippi Academy of Sciences. The university also said he has served as a delegate to the National Science Teaching Association Congress and as a longtime science fair judge.
“Dr. Johnny Mattox represents the very best of Christian higher education,” Blue Mountain Christian University President Dr. Barbara McMillin said in the university’s news release. The release noted the Mattox-Eaton Biology Award, which the university said recognizes outstanding biology students at Blue Mountain Christian University, as an example of his lasting impact. The university described itself as an institution that helps students develop intellectual integrity, academic excellence, civility and character.
