Blue Mountain Christian University honors longtime staff member Jean Harrington
BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — Jean Harrington, a longtime employee of Blue Mountain Christian University, has been recognized for her more than three decades of service to the institution. Currently serving as the administrative assistant for the School of Education, Harrington’s journey at BMCU began after a 33-year career as a public high school English teacher, according to university officials.
Harrington transitioned to BMCU after expressing interest in a new challenge in an office environment during a chance encounter with then-President Dr. E. Harold Fisher. She was recruited to help organize the Registrar’s Office, a role she filled for years before moving to the School of Education in 2007. Her responsibilities have included guiding students and assisting with administrative tasks, as well as offering encouragement rooted in her Christian faith.
Throughout her tenure, Harrington played a key role in preparing Continuing Education Unit certificates for teachers across the region and dedicated about a decade to the university’s Literacy on the Lawn program, which served hundreds of kindergarten students annually. She also chaired the Strategic Direction 04 Committee, an initiative aimed at promoting volunteer service opportunities at the university.
Her contributions earned her the university’s Staff of the Year award, though she has never sought recognition. “She always preferred to work behind the scenes,” colleagues said. Dr. Ashley Coleman, dean of the School of Education, praised Harrington’s impact, calling her the “heart of our department” and noting her willingness to go above and beyond for students and staff alike.
Harrington’s service extends beyond the university. A member of Blue Mountain Baptist Church, she has served as church clerk for about 20 years and has taught Sunday School for more than 50 years, investing in the spiritual growth of multiple generations. Her faith is reflected in her lifelong dedication to service, with BMCU President Dr. Barbara McMillin citing Colossians 3:23-24 as emblematic of her life and work.
“Her unwavering faith and servant heart have inspired many,” McMillin said. “Her legacy at Blue Mountain Christian University is one of faithful service, integrity, and love for her community and her Savior.”
As a treasured member of the BMCU family, Harrington’s example continues to inspire students, faculty, and the broader community through her quiet, Christ-like devotion and service.
