Advisory warns drivers to avoid drinking this Labor Day weekend

Law enforcement will be on the lookout for impaired drivers during the Labor Day weekend, a public safety advisory said, and motorists were urged to find another way home if they plan to drink.

The advisory said it is illegal in most states to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 grams per deciliter or higher. It noted that Utah’s legal limit is 0.05 g/dL.

The advisory defined a standard drink as about 0.54 ounces of pure alcohol, roughly equal to one shot of distilled spirits, a 5-ounce glass of wine or a 12-ounce beer.

The advisory said the average DUI costs about $10,000 when attorney fees, fines, court costs, lost work time and higher insurance rates are included. It added that about 30% of U.S. traffic crash fatalities involve drunk drivers.

“If you’re drinking, don’t get behind the wheel,” the advisory said, using the slogan “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
