Dangerous heat is expected to stick around in Mississippi through early next week, with heat indices reaching as high as 115 degrees in some areas, forecasters said. The most hazardous heat is expected from late morning through the afternoon each day, they said.
Officials urged residents to limit prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day and to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. They also advised taking frequent breaks in cool or shaded areas if outdoor work or activity is required.
Officials said people should know the signs of heat illness and take immediate action if someone becomes sick. They warned never to leave children, older adults or pets in a vehicle.
Residents were urged to check on family, friends and neighbors, and to stay cool and hydrated, officials said, noting that heat can become dangerous quickly.
