Greene County stretch of State Route 57 named Purple Heart Highway for veteran

A section of State Route 57 in Greene County was designated the Purple Heart Highway on Thursday, July 2, in honor of Rawleigh X.L. Bradley, a World War II and Korean War veteran, the Mississippi Department of Transportation said.

The ceremony was held at Canaan Land United Pentecostal Church in Leakesville, the department said.

Charles Busby, MDOT’s Southern District transportation commissioner, spoke at the event, which MDOT said was attended by military officials and other guests.

MDOT said Bradley was seriously wounded in the Korean War and never received a Purple Heart during his lifetime. After his daughter, Pamela, contacted Congressman Mike Ezell’s office and federal agencies, Bradley’s family was presented a Purple Heart at the Greene County Veterans Day program on Nov. 9, 2023, more than 70 years after he was wounded, the department said.
