Mississippi names highway segment in honor of Vietnam veteran Joe Lofton
Family members, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3806 members, friends, and community members gathered Tuesday to dedicate a portion of Mississippi Highway 46 as the ‘Joe Eddie Lofton Memorial Highway.’
The designation covers a one-mile stretch starting at the Webster County line and extending east toward the Village of Mantee.
Lofton received numerous military awards, including the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
He was the only resident of Mantee to make the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War, the department said.
